Samus is not in Fortnite because Nintendo wanted her to only appear on the Switch

Fortnite has done many collaborations with other iconic video game characters like Halo’s Master Chief, Kratos from God of War, Snake from Metal Gear Solid, and a bunch of others. You may have wondered why a Nintendo character has not appeared in Fortnite and that’s because the company doesn’t want their icons to appear on other platforms.

Metroid’s Samus was one of the Nintendo characters that Epic Games was considering to add to Fortnite. This information is derived from an interview with Donald Mustard, former Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games, from Game File.

Donald Mustard said Nintendo declined the offer from Epic Games to include Samus Aran in Fortnite. They did not want their character to pop up on other platforms like PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

“They got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms,” he said.

“They would be thrilled to have Nintendo characters in Fortnite, but just only if it’s on their platform.”

“For me and for all of Epic, we’re like, ‘That is an absolute must. We want to make sure that Fortnite is the same experience, no matter what screen or device you’re playing on.’

This isn’t surprising coming from Nintendo since they did do this exact thing with Rocket League. When the Soccer with Cars title came to the Nintendo Switch, Epic Games formed a partnership where they added a Luigi, Mario, and Samus style car, but only users on the Nintendo Switch could see them. They would appear different on all the other platforms.

It could have been possible to see Samus Aran from Metroid in Fortnite, but Epic Games did not like the idea Nintendo had.
