It was a long weekend for Arrowhead Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment as negativity was trending towards Helldivers 2. It was announced on Friday, that those who play Helldivers 2 on PC via Steam will be required to link a PSN account by June. Following their announcement, Sony decided not to proceed with linking PlayStation Network and Steam accounts for new and existing players.

This announcement came at midnight on May 6, 2024, when the update was supposed to start happening for new players. Here is the response by Sony via X (Twitter):

“We’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.”

The purpose of linking accounts was to protect players. Now, they are exploring other options and still learning what is best for PC players.

“We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans”

Helldivers 2 on Steam had over 100,000 negative reviews from the time of the first announcement up until PlayStation reversed its decision. It came to the point where Steam was giving refunds to players who had well over 100 hours played on the game which isn’t the normal case when refunding.

A positive from of all of this was the player count never suffered from all the negative responses to Sony’s decision.

For now, you can only play Helldivers on PlayStation 5 or PC via Steam. An Xbox Series X version has not been released, but it has been discussed.
