The long-forgotten mobile game Persona 3 Aigis: The First Mission is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC after 17 years.

One of the most obscure Persona spin-off titles, Aigis: The First Mission had never officially released outside of Japan. However, that is set to change with the G-Mode Archives project.

Persona 3 Aigis: The First Mission is what exactly?

Aigis: The First Mission was a Japanese phone game, released in 2007. This means that it is extremely primitive by modern standards, designed for a phone’s D-pad and numpad on pre-smartphone technology.

It stars Aigis, the breakout robot companion from Persona 3. Set ten years before the events of P3, it follows Aigis on her first mission in May of 1999.

The player controls Aigis in a third-person action game with a fixed camera. Aigis can use guns to hit multiple distant targets, a grenade launcher for ranged single-target, or a drill for melee. She can also summon her Persona, Palladion, who has four unlockable abilities.

Aigis gains money and experience by defeating Shadows, those amorphous blob enemies ubiquitous to the Persona series. She can spend experience to level up, gaining new skills, and money on items at the lab, which serves as a safe hub level.

Aigis meets with both new original characters and Persona 3 familiar faces. The lab belongs to the notable Kirijo Group which supported the S.E.E.S group in Persona 3. Likewise, the game takes place on Yakushima Island, where the Persona 3 protagonist and friends first met Aigis.

Is this a remake?

Aigis: The First Mission is not a remake in the same vein as Persona 3 Reload. Instead, it’s more like the Persona 3 Portable release on Steam: a one-to-one direct port of an old game.

This means that new fans coming from Persona 3 Reload should keep their expectations in check. Many of the best old games from 2007 are still enjoyable on modern systems, like the seminal titles Bioshock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, or Portal.

However, old mobile games were working with severely limited hardware, which even for the time were restrictive in game design.

From a gameplay perspective, The First Mission is not likely to be a smooth experience.

In terms of story, this is firmly a spin-off. Thus, it will carry some expectations that the player knows and is familiar with the plot of Persona 3, including some of its mid-to-late-game spoilers about Aigis’ backstory.

Additionally, the only reason this ancient title is even seeing the light of day is because it is part of the G-Mode Archives. This has publisher G-Mode take old Java-based mobile games and release them on modern systems.

As a result, fans should be wary that the ports aren’t likely to be of the highest quality, with more than rudimentary features.

While it will support modern controllers, fans should be aware that the original gameplay had very limited controls. Namely, four-directional movement, an attack and a jump button, a Persona summon button, and a menu button.

Finally, at time of writing, Aigis: The First Mission only has an official release in Japanese, with no other languages supported.
