Fallout 3 is set in the year 2277 and takes place in Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and parts of Maryland. In all Fallout games you start in a Vault and in Fallout 3 you begin in Vault 101 which is near Megaton, a town that will play a role in the game.

There are a total of 6 Vaults you can find in your Fallout 3 adventure and they do play a role in the story. They all have different backgrounds such as Vault 112 which features the Tranquility Lane simulation that can be very evil.
